O Douro Superior: A Região Mais Extrema do Vinho em Portugal

Douro Superior: Portugal's Most Extreme Wine Region

In the far eastern reaches of the Douro Valley, where the river still runs wild and schist mountains rise under a relentless sun, lies the Douro Superior — the most remote, most arid, and for many the most fascinating wine sub-region in Portugal.

What Makes the Douro Superior Unique

The Douro Superior is one of three sub-regions of the Douro Vinhateiro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, the climate is continental and extreme: summers reaching 40°C, harsh winters, and barely 400mm of rainfall per year. It is this adversity that forces the vine to fight, and it is in that struggle that the greatness of its wines is born.

The poor, steep schist soils compel roots to penetrate metres deep in search of water and nutrients. The result is grapes of extraordinary concentration, with intense aromas of dark fruit, spice, and wet earth.

The Traditional Grape Varieties

The oldest vineyards of the Douro Superior preserve indigenous varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. Each variety brings its own voice to the blend — perfume, structure, freshness, and colour — creating wines with a unique and unmistakable identity.
